Long ago, the great chief Tamaki sought a perfect land to settle. His sons, the guardians of the land and sea, embarked on a journey guided by their ancestor, Tiriwa. As they paddled their waka (canoe) across the sparkling waters, they discovered lush forests, fertile valleys, and majestic mountains.
The youngest son, Ngātoroirangi, was drawn to the beauty of the Hauraki Gulf. With the guidance of his ancestors, he climbed the highest volcanic peak, Rangitoto, seeking spiritual connection. From its summit, he gazed upon the sprawling landscape, envisioning a thriving settlement.
Ngātoroirangi descended and met his brothers at the harbor. With unity and determination, they established a place of shelter, naming it Tāmaki-makau-rau, a land beloved by many. As they settled, the people flourished, weaving their stories into the tapestry of Auckland.
Today, Auckland stands as a vibrant mosaic of cultures, where the spirit of Maori heritage dances alongside modernity. From the bustling cityscape to the tranquil harbors, the essence of Tāmaki-makau-rau continues to echo through the hills and waters, inviting all to embrace its beauty and embrace the spirit of unity.”
