A picture is worth a thousand words

Hello everyone, and welcome! You’ve all heard the saying, ‘A picture is worth a thousand words,’ right? Well, today I want to talk about why this is especially true for tradespeople who plan to come and work in New Zealand.

The Power of Visuals: In the trades, visuals are incredibly powerful. Whether you’re a carpenter, electrician, plumber, or any other tradesperson, showing your work through pictures and videos can significantly enhance your profile.

Let’s start from your photo on the top of CV. You do not have to add it, but in the same time if the photo is good – it helps to sell your skills! Australian Cv and New Zealand corporate CV does not require a photo! I always advise you to ask a friend or your wife to make such a photo you use on your CV. Why? It is more natural and often there is more energy in your eyes than you can have in selfies.

Creating a Visual Portfolio: If you don’t already have one, start putting together a visual portfolio. Include photos and videos of your past projects, the tools you use, and even before-and-after shots. Listing your skills on a resume is one thing, but showing the high-quality work you’ve done is another.

Why It Matters in New Zealand: New Zealand places a high value on practical skills and hands-on experience. Employers want to see tangible proof of your abilities. A visual portfolio not only highlights what you can do but also shows your dedication to your craft. New Zealander value your dedication as well, I have seen the job offer after a flooring installer in Singapore redone his video a few times responding business owner requests. It was appreciated.

How to Get Started:

  • Take High-Quality Photos: Ensure your images are clear and professional-looking. Good lighting and angles can make a big difference. By the way, you do not have to be inside all of your photos.
  • Document Your Process: Show step-by-step progress of your work. This helps potential employers understand your methods and attention to detail.
  • Use Social Media: Platforms like Instagram, LinkedIn, and Facebook are great for showcasing your work. Create posts, stories, and even live videos to keep your audience engaged if this is allowed by your existing employer.
  • Create a Website: If possible, set up a simple website or online portfolio. This gives you a professional edge and makes it easy for employers to see your work. (more applicable to Architectural draftsmen, technician, mechanic)

Testimonials and References: Include testimonials from previous clients or employers.

A picture of a finished project alongside a positive testimonial can be incredibly powerful.

So, if you’re planning to come and work in New Zealand as a tradesperson, start building that visual portfolio today. It’s an investment that can set you apart and open amazing opportunities.
