Employers across New Zealand who rely on international skilled tradies should be aware of several key immigration changes rolling out between August and November 2025. These updates affect job check applications, the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV), and pathways to residence for trades listed on the Green List.
Job Check Application Online Form Changes in September 2025
From Monday 29 September 2025, Immigration NZ will introduce a new job check portal.
Employers must now provide additional upfront details to support applications, including:
- Why the role is needed
- The size of your business
- How many New Zealanders are currently employed (approximated for larger organisations)
⚠️ Any draft applications must be submitted by 8:00 AM, Sunday 28 September 2025, or restarted in the new system.
National Occupation List (NOL) – November 2025
As of 3 November 2025, Immigration NZ will use the National Occupation List (NOL)—now the official job classification system replacing ANZSCO—for AEWV processing in around 90 higher-skilled roles (Level 1–3).

Green List Pathway for Tradies – August 2025
Starting 18 August 2025, workers in the following tradie occupations may apply for a Work to Residence visa after 24 months of work experience in NZ:
- Metal Fabricator
- Metal Machinist (First Class)
- Fitter (General), Fitter & Turner, Fitter Welder
- Pressure Welder, Welder
- Panel Beater, Vehicle Painter, Paving Plant Operator

Eligibility & Wage Thresholds
To apply for residence through the Green List, applicants must:
✅ Be 55 years or under
✅ Meet health, character, and English language requirements
✅ Have 24 months of full-time, paid NZ work experience in their occupation
✅ Meet wage thresholds specific to their trade
- $43.63/hr (or $90,750/year) for Metal Fabricators, Welders, Fitters, and Machinists
- $38.59/hr (or $80,267/year) for Paving Plant Operators, Panel Beaters, and Vehicle Painters

Welders are classified as a Tier 2 Green List role. They can apply for residence after 2 years of work in NZ, provided they:
- Earn at least NZD $43.63/hr (130% of the 2024 median wage)
- Have been paid at or above this rate for 24 out of 30 months before applying
What Employers Should Do
- Submit any draft job check applications before 28 September 2025.
- Prepare for the new job check portal from 29 September 2025.
- Get ready for NOL integration from 3 November 2025.
- Ensure employment offers for Green List tradies meet the wage thresholds.
